TAIERI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

SPRING SHOW There was a creditable entry in St. Luke's Hall, Mosgiel, on Saturday afternoon and evening for the spring show of the Taieri Horticultural Society. It was a big improvement on last year’s, and it was capably run by an energetic committee, with Mr J. S. McCartney as president and Miss M. Swallow as secretary. The proceeds were in aid of the Soldiers’, Entertainment Fund. The judges were as follows: —Cut flowers and vegetables, Mr R. Fountain (Dunedin) ; decorative work, Mrs On- Campbell (Dunedin) : industrial exhibits, Mrs J. Kirkland and Miss McPherson (Mosgiel). MiFountain said the show was a decided improvement on that of 1910. The outstanding exhibits were polyanthus, hyacinths, and flowering shrubs. Narcissi were well represented, but could have been better. Mrs Campbell expressed herself as delighted with the decorative work. Special mention was made of an exhibit of Mrs Souter’s — a bowl of pansies; and of another by Mrs Bedford—a bowl of anemones. The bowk of narcissi wore attractively arranged, and the childron’s work was good. Most points trophies were gained as follows: —Premier bloom in the show, Mrs Gillon; narcissi, Mrs Gillon; cut flowers other than narcissi, Miss McPherson; decorative, Miss McPherson; industrial Mrs D. Barnes: children’s cut flowers, Donald Graham; children’s decorative, over 10, Aynsley Gillon; under 10, Allison Aitkon; vegetables, Mrs P. Johnston. The following were awarded first prize tickets in the various sections: — Pot plants—Mr J. Aitken and Hr G. Duncan. Cut flowers and decorative work—Mrs Gillon, Miss McPherson, Mrs M. Brown, Mrs E. Pilling, Mrs E. Bedford, Mrs J. L. Williams, Mr J. F. McCartney, Mrs D. Haggart, Mrs J. McAusland, Mrs T. J. Finnic, Mr J. Aitken, Mrs J. Graham, Mr A. W. McCunn, Miss McDonald, Mrs R. Holland, Miss G. Smeaton. Children’s floral work—Donald Graham, Aynsley Gillon, Allison Aitken, Betty White, and Rona Gamble. Industrial—Adults, Miss G. Smeaton, Miss E. W.
