PARLIAMENT

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES (P A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. Two Bills, the Mining Amendment Bill and the Native Purposes Bill, the latter being another washing-up measure, were introduced by Governor’s Message when the House resumed. Both were read a second time pro forma, the first being referred to the Goldfields and Mines Committee, and the latter to the Native Affairs Committee. The debate on the Social Security Amendment Bill (reported elsewhere) occupied the time of the House up to the adjournment. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. The Legislative Council to-day passed the Manukau County Council Empowering Bill, the Wellington Free Ambulance Bill, and the Standards Bill. The Standards Bill was amended by having a paragraph deleted. The Leader of the Council, Mr Wilson, explained that the paragraph appeared to give the Standards Council unfettered power in appointing committees. The real position was that the council had the power to appoint committees, subject to the prior consent of the Minister.
