Dr Vernon Griffiths (judge of the vocal and instrumental sections) thanked the audience for the interest displayed in the festival and m the candidates. It was the candidates’ festival, and to prepare for it there was much study , and practice, hard work for the teachers, and sacrifices on behalf of the parents. He spoke words of encouragement to the competitors, and urged them to pursue their studies with diligence and determination. He counselled young vocalists to take every care of their voices so that they would develop to their fullest beauty in later years. Dr Griffiths congratulated the town and district in possessing the combination that made the festival possible. As an outcome some day the more gifted of the young folks might bo selected to proceed to the musical colleges of renown in the Home countries to pursue their studies. To-night’s programme will consist of tap and operatic dancing, dance duo, adult elocutionary items, and one-act plays. There are three entries for the last named, two by the Mosgiel Players and one by the Green Island Women’s Institute Drama Circle.
