INTEREST-FREE LOANS

TOTAL NOW £2,664,691 MINISTER EXPRESSES APPRECIATION [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 18. The following interest-free Joans and donations to the War Expenses Fund are acknowledged by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash (loans of £SOO or more and gifts of £2O or more only) : J 3. J. Ball (N.Z.) Ltd., Auckland, monthly contribution, £500; J.1.H., Wellington, gift of £2O; P. Gourdie, Ashburton, for the duration, £300; M. Mortensen, of Levin, gift of £35. Total to date, £2,604,091. In a statement issued to-day, Mr Nash expressed appreciation of the manner in which interest-free loans and donations to the War Expenses Account were continuing to come to hand. “ Hardly a day passes,” Mr Nash said, “ that does not bring some splendid example of self-denial on the part of men and women anxious to make some positive contribution, towards the strengthening of our war effort. A ease in point that has come to my notice during the past week is the of an individual who has been carrying out important work for the Government in connection with the war effort, for which he has received a certain modest remuneration. After providing for tax commitments in respect of the payment received, the individual concerned has very generously returned the entire balance to the Government as an in-terest-free war loan for the duration of the war and six months thereafter, “ When we eventually win through,” Mr Nash concluded, “ our thanks will be due in no small measure to those many men and women, and especially to “those of comparatively _ modest means, in New Zealand and in other parts of the Empire, who by the very real sacrifices they are voluntarily making are helping to keep our financial front sound and solid.”
