JOTTINGS

Reminders. Nominations for the South Canterbury mooting to be held on Saturday of next week close to-morrow at 9 p.m. Nominations for the Southland Racing Club’s mooting to bo held on May 3 close on Friday at 5 p.m. Had Enough Superex won the Otautau Steeplechase well, and ran a good race in the Great Western on the opening day at Riverton, but looked a very tired horse when paraded for the .steeplechase yesterday, and ran a little worso'tlian he looked. Winning Sires, The young imported sire, Irish. Lancer, headed the list of winning sires at the Riverton meeting with £1,115, and the next on the list are Balboa £1,055, Night Raid £793, Taper Money ' £5lO, Gustavo £305, Nightmarch £290, Iliad £215, Fhilamor £2lO, and Valkyrian £2OO. Ballybrit.. Ballybrit was not considered to be ready by his trainer when lie won tho open steeplechase on the-second day, having only been in work about three weeks. After he had won ii was reported that Mr W. E. Halett had purchased him, but when questioned about the sale yesterday Mr Hazlett denied tl) e rumour. The " Hat Trick.” Royal Lancer won the three principal races ou the programme at the Riverton meeting, a feat that has never been done before. Yesterday’s success marked his tenth win Ibis season, and he appeared to win more easily than on either of the previous days, lie improved with the racing, while- several of those opposed to him were feeling the effects of tho heavy going. Principal Stake Winners. Mr W. Swale headed the list of winning owners at the Riverton meeting with £1,070, and the next on the list are Messrs G. H. Murdoch £478, P. and R. Butel £4lO, J. Morrison £4OO, J. S. and \V. E. Hazlett £350, P. J. Boyle £335, M. Haulcv £2BO, O. Connollv £250, P. Moore £2lO, and W. P. Hogan £205. Spendthrift. Spendthrift was produced only once at the Riverton meeting, and his success in the Groat Western Steeplechase on Saturday suggests that tho Messrs Hazlett Bros, have a very high-class jumper to carry their colours in tho big cross-country races during the approaching meetings. Spendthrift, is not the first of Paper Money’s progeny to win over country, but he is the first to win over a three-mile course. Jewish Lad. Until he fell at the last fence in the Riverton Steeplechase ou Monday Jewish 'i had given two beautiful displays of clean and fast jumping, and it was hard luck for his owner and trainer to be robbed of the £BO attached to second place by the mistake he made at tho smallest fence on the course. Though well beaten by Ballybrit at the time, there was not another liorso within 50yds of him when he fell. Araboa. Now racing as a nine-year-old, Araboa showed a good return to his early form by winning the last races on Monday and yesterday, and is now trained by J. R. Cochrane at Gore, who also has his half-sister, Aravano, in his care. Araboa, after the good form he showed in Monday’s races, was allowed to return the best dividend of the meeting, and now that the courses are likely to be softer and lie has returned to form is likely to win more races (his winter. Apprentices to the Fore. Apprentice jockeys won 17 of the 22 racing events at the Riverton meeting. W. F. Ellis with four wins was the most successful, with A C. Ingram and A. Anderson three each, and P. J. Boyle, jnn., and T. J. Boyle two eaeli next on the list. R. K. Ford, L. J. Ellis, A. Messervy, H. A. Anderton, S. Shaw, and R. A. Gibson each rode one winner. The two hardest-worked apprentices were D. A. Hamill (who had 18 mounts) and A C. Ingram (13). Both of these lads rode in all five of the jumping races, the latter scoring on Attire.
