SHORTAGE OF TRADESMEN.
■ TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln a letter appearing in tonight’s ‘ Star ’ “A. Hall ” mentions the necessity of importing tradesmen from overseas, and that the shortage is a legacy of the depression. Is it? In the army of public works employees scattered over New Zealand there are many tradesmen engaged in labouring work, virtually on unemployment relief, and, whilst admitting that few apprentices were trained during the depression years. I make so bold as to state that if all tradesmen now on public works were public-spirited enough to return to their respective callings the shortage of tradesmen would no longer exist.—l am, etc., Observer. June 13.
