DEFENCE APPEAL.
TO THE EDITOh Sir,—lf there are 350,000 men in New Zealand between the ages of 20 and 55 years, inclusive of more than 150,000 between the ages of 20 and 32. the response to Mr Savage’s appeal by barely 7,000 men is certainly disgraceful. Are we becoming a nation of a single, sex? I honestly believe that, if necessity arose, the women of New Zealand would respond to their country’s call by tens of thousands, not mere thousands. Yet these young men may be seen each Saturday afternoon at the various football matches, yelling like dervishes, but taking no part therein. Oh, dear, no, for the game is far too rough. Every person who loves his country and who thinks rea-
sonably wants to see_ conscription brought into force. This is the only way to make these young fellows undertake what is certainly their bounden duty. Another thing, I consider the Minister of Defence should issue small metal badges to those men who voluntarily undertake to serve their country, and New Zealand in particular. This might also have the effect of stimulating recruiting.—l am, etc., Kiwi. J une 13
