OBITUARY
MR JOHN SANDES Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, November 29. The death Has occurred of the veteran Australian journalist, Mr John Sandes, formerly of the Melbourne ‘ Argus,’ the ‘ Sydney Morning Herald,’ and the ‘ Sydney Daily Telegraph.’ [Mr John Sandes, who was born in Cork in 1863, arrived in Australia in 1887. He was on the staff of the ‘ Argus ’ from 1888 to 1903. and leader writer and reviewer for tne ‘ Sydney Daily Telegraph ’ from 1903 to 1919, eventually being London representative of that paper. He represented New Zealand and Australian morning papers during the tour of the Prince of Wales in H.M.S. Renown, in 1920.] MR GEORGE SAMUEL GULLY There died in Dunedin yesterday, at an advanced age, Mr George. Samuel Gully, who was well known by the older generation in commercial and musical circles in the city. Mr Gully was born in Ireland in 1853, and when he was 24 years of age he came to Now Zealand, settling in Dunedin, where he lived till his death. Equipped with a sound business training, his qualifications gained him instant employment on his arrival in this city, and he was accountant to several softgoods firms, including Butterworth Bros, before he joined J. Rattray and Co. (later J. Rattray and Son) in a similar capacity. Mr Gully retired after about 30 years’ service in 1916. He did not associate himself with public affairs, but, being an accomplished musician, he was a member of the Orchestral Society for some years. Ho was also at one time a keen golfer and was a member at Balmacewen. The deceased was a bachelor, and a rather unique feature of his lengthy residence in Dunedin was that he was a boarder at the same house for 38 years. He has no relatives in New Zealand, a brother and sister living in Ireland and two nieces in Queensland.
