LARGE CATTLE YARDING

SOME RECESSIONS IN VALUES FAT PIG PRICES ALSO LOWER Owing to a large yarding of some 470 head of fat cattle being forward at the Burnside stock sales to-day, these, along with the fat pigs, comprised the only auctions that had begun at the time of going to press. Though there was a keen demand by purchasers at the opening of the cattle market to fill immediate requirements, decreases in values to the extent of up to £2 for bullocks, and £1 10s for cows and heifers, were noticeable over the concluding stages of the sale! Fat pigs were yarded in larger numbers than at the market two weeks a<m, and some recession in values took place. Baconers were sold at prices averaging about 8d lb, while porkers realised about B£d lb ,the latter showing the greatest drop. Good supplies were forward from the north. Fat sheep yarded numbered about 1,600. All points of the compass were represented in the large yarding of about 470 head of cattle, which included some 20 trucks from the Canterbury and North Otago districts. Quality throughout was good, but naturally, with such large numbers forward, there was a decided tailing of inferior cattle and old cows. Keen_ competition characterised the opening of the market, as many of the trade buyers were short supplied after Show Week. When their* immediate requirements had been satisfied there came a decided easing. Prices in some cases can be quoted at over £2 a head lower than at the auction a fortnight ago. Extra prime handy-weight heifers proved to be the exception, these finding a ready market at satisfactory prices. Other grades of cows and heifers were about £l to £1 10s down on late rates.
