LAWRENCE NOTES

[Fkom Ouh Correspondent.] MILK IN SCHOOLS The free milk supply to schools which has already been working in city schools for a period commenced in Lawrence last week. The milk, which pasteurised and bottled in Balclutha, arrives by rail at midnight and is consumed with relish during the morning recess. A suggestion has been made that if the milk were supplied locally there would bo no necessity for the supply being some hours old before consuming. This would also enable the supplier to devote his whole time maintaining the supply and overcome the present winter discontinuance of the scheme. CLUTHA VALLEY SCHOOL. The work on the building of the Clutha Valley High School has now reached the framework for the main block of four rooms. The_ building is being erected on the main road between Balclutha and Tuapeka Mouth, and about a mile from the new bridge. The complete plans are for four primary classrooms and two secondary rooms, and the school is to be opened in February. OBITUARY On November 17, with the death of Mrs Sarah Ann Donohue, at the age of ~79 years, the district lost yet another link with the early days of Tuapeka and Otago. Born in Drummuck, County Derry, Ireland, the deceased arrived in New Zealand with her brother, Mr John M'Gill in 1879, and after some time here, she married the late Mr John Donohue, being subsequently engaged in farming pursuits in the Tuapeka Flat for over 40 years. Her husband predeceased her some 26 years ago and since that time the deceased lived in retirement at Lawrence. The funeral, which was largely attended, left St. Patrick’s Church, the Rev. Father Scanlan performing the last rites at the church and graveside. Mrs Donohue will be missed by a wide circle of friends, both young and old, and the sympathies of the entire district are extended to the family in their loss. One daughter predeceased her six years ago, and the deceased is survived by live daughters and two sons —Mrs Casson (Lumsden), Mrs Alcock (Wingatui), and Mrs Plever (Australia), Misses Nell (Port Chalmers) and Sarah (Lawrence), and her two sons, John and Edward (Lawrence) .
