TRAINING COLLEGE EXHIBITS
WORK OF STUDENTS A comprehensive and very interesting display of the art and handcraft work of students at the Dunedin Training College was opened yesterday afternoon in the manual training building. The exhibition covers all phases of the practical cultural training of the students. The exhibition will be open to-day from 3.30 to 5.30 p.m., and to-morrow from 10 a.m. till noon. From one point of view, the exhibition is an appropriate pendant to the recent international exhibition of children’s art since it demonstrates the training methods employed locally and the results which are obtained by them. The general standard of the work is not remarkably high, but the exhibits are usually effective in conception and design if not in actual execution. This applies, of course, more purely to the art work. The paintings, sketches, and caricatures include some exhibits which are more than promising, but two or three students are responsible for this. The poster work in stimulating, and it is obvious how effectively it can' be used in teaching, in geography, and history, for instance. An interesting display of imaginative work includes original scenes and designs and visual impressions of a descriptive piece of music. Oils, water colours, pen and pencil sketches, wood engravings and lino cuts are in the art section. In the handwork section, the standard is most creditable, and some of the examples of the various crafts are really excellent. Many forms of needlework, tapestry, beadwork, leather tooling, raffia and basket work, and pokerwork are displayed, all the articles being worked from original designs.
