DETGURS ADVISED IN PLAGES The steady drizzle which persisted for two days ceased on Saturday morning, and' the afternoon was fiite, L but dull. Sunday morning was also fine, but the drizzle again came on about midday, and ■ continued steadily throughout the afternoon and evening, with occasional heavy showers. This morning there were showers, but the conditions looked better. The cessation on Saturday afternoon and yesterday morning apparently gave the flooded portions of roads an opportunity to clear, and it ’was reported by the Automobile Association (Otago) to-day that though there is water over the road at Hilderthprpe, north of Oamaru, cars are able to proceed at a slow speed. Road reconstruction work' is being carried on in the vicinity of Studholme, and as a result of the wet weather the surface has been badly cut up, and motorists are advised to make a detour through Waimate. Though there is a quantity of surface water between Oamaru and Timaru, that at Hinds was able to drain away rapidly, and no serious trouble is anticipated. The Main South road is in very bad condition north of Balclutha, where repair work is in progress. This section is now almost impassable, and one motorists who came through this morning reported cars sinking almost to the .axles. The Automobile Association advises motorists to make a detour from Milton through Bae’s Junction and Tapanui to Gore, bringing ,the trip from Dunedin to 120 miles. By doing this they will be helping not only themselves, but also the Public Works Department, which is carrying out the work, as when a car becomes bogged the men employed on the job have to stop work and assist in getting the vehicle clear.
