UNEMPLOYED WORKERS' MOVEMENT
The general meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening. Cr M. Silverstone (president) presided over a large attendance of members, including about 30 members from the Waitati camp., Tim President referred to the recent calamity at the Public Works camp in the North Island, and a vote of condolence was passed, the members standing in silence. Correspondence was received from Hon. D. G. Sullivan (Minister of Kailways), Hon. P. Fraser (Minister of Health), Christchurch N.U.W.M., Labour Bureau (Dunedin), Federation of Labour (Wellington), general secretary N.D.W.M. (Wellington), Haast Pass P.W.D. job, Waitati camp job, Waihola unemployed, and other local organisations. The organising report showed that 17 new members had joined since last meeting, one had rejoined, 13 had been granted clearances to other unions, and 32 had received full-time work on rotational jobs. The Secretary intimated that he had attended the Labour Bureau for a ballot where men had been drawn for the Waitati camp job, and he had visited the Sawyers Bay job and investigated the complaints tabled at the last meeting. It was agreed that unless 20 sustenance men were present in future at meetings no free orders be granted for groceries. A few complaints were tabled from the Waitati camp job and from Sawyers Bay and left in the president’s hands to take un with the Ministers concerned when in Wellington this week. The secretary was requested to pay a visit to the job at Waitati as soon as it was convenient. Owing to the executive not having sufficient time the matter of remits and delegate to conference was deferred. Complaints tabled locally were left in the secretary’s hands to take up with the Labour Bureau and Public Works engineer. A collection was taken up on behalf of the local Spanish Aid Medical Committee.
