OTAGO CENTRE MEETING A meeting of the Otago Centre of tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last night, Mr W. A. Jenkins (president) being in the chair. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho secretary of the Tokomairiro Club wrote advising that it had resolved to alter the date of its carnival to February 19, as the Roxburgh carnival and the Ravensbourne regatta were set down for the day it had originally decided upon. A letter was received from the Lawrence Club thanking the centre for its assistance during “ learn to swim ” week. The letter also referred to the high standard of the demonstrations given by Messrs J. Swan and H. R. Isaacs. Several reasons for not holding the New Zealand intermediate and junior championships at Rotorua under the auspices of tho Bay of Plenty Centre, as arranged at the conference of centres, were forwarded by the Hawke’s Bay Centre.—lt was decided to inform the latter that the Otago Centre was still in favour of the championships being held by the Bay of Plenty Centre at Rotorua. The secretary of the Balclutha Club applied for permission to hold its carnival on March s.—Granted. A circular was received from the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association stating that Misses Mona Leydon, Gwen Rix, and Joyce Macdonald would be available for an educational tour after the British Empire Games. It was pointed out that the principal object of such a tour was the coaching of country swimmers and giving demonstrations to school children. The Otago Centre was asked if it desired a visit.—lt was decided to obtain the views of the affiliated clubs. A further circular from the association stated that it was expected to arrange a tour of New Zealand by nine Canadian swimmers after the Empire Games, and the centre was asked if it desired a visit.—lt was decided to accept the terms and ask for a visit. Permission was granted to hold the Boy Scouts’ swimming carnival on March 22. WATER POLO. In liis report on the water polo tournament, Mr D. C. Bannatyne stated that there was still one match to be played, hut that would not affect the result as the Kiwi team was in an (unbeatable position. He also drew attention to the number of defaults in the tournament and to_ the late arrival of the players.—Received. CONGRATULATIONS.

The chairman extended the ■ congratulations of the centre to the St. Clair Club on its success at the surf championships held recently at New Brighton, Christchurch. This club had brought the Nelson shield to Dunedin for the first time. HARBOUR RACE. The Kiwi Club was granted permission to hold its harbour race on March 12. DIVING RULES. A report concerning the rules for diving at the New Zealand intermediate and junior championships held at Nelson was given by Mr D. Freeman, who stated that the Dunedin divers were not allowed to do the pike with half-screw as their voluntary dive, as they were informed that it was the half-screw B. The writer pointed out that according to the latest handbook (1935) the pike with half-screw was different from the half-screw, there being no half-screw B shown. Mr Matthews said he thought the ruling given at Nelson was wrong according to the handbook, which laid down that no compulsory dive could be repeated as a voluntary. He moved that a ruling on the matter be obtained from the New Zealand Council. The chairman agreed with Mr Matthews, and the motion was carried. BALCLUTHA QUEEN CARNIVAL. Mr K. Evans outlined the scheme which had been adopted by the Balclutha Swimming Club for the purposes of raising funds for the roofing and heating of the Balolutha baths. The project was favourably commented on by the chairman, who said that recently two lives had been lost in the river, and pointed to the danger of bathing there. It was decided to forward a letter to the Balclutha Club congratulating it on its decision and assuring it of the support of the centre. OWAKA CARNIVAL.
