RIVER PROTECTION
BIG JOB FACES THE GOVERNMENT WORK FOR A LOT OF MEM [Pm Unitm Press Assocnmo*.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. The hope that in the near future ifi would bo possible for the Government to embark on a comprehensive schema of river protection work was to-day by the Minister of Works (Mr Webb) The Minister said the question was at present receiving the consideration of the Government, Mr Semple having arranged before he left New Zealand for reports to be prepared on the condition of rivers throughout New Zeaand. , ~ “ Obviously,” said Mr Webb, this is a work that is long overdue. Every big flood creates extensive damage to roads and bridges, and washes away thousands of acres of good river silt land, but the magnitude of the problem is such that a, considerable amount of money is required, and the most modern machinery will need to bo employed to do the work as expeditiously, and, as economically as possible. This is a job that will employ a lot of men and render a great national service, and wa are hoping that it will be possible to make a start in the not distant future.”
