LIBEL.
TO THB EDITOR.Sir,—While enjoying the performance! of ‘ Libel,’ presented by the Dunedin Repertory Society, I should like to question the praise lavished on this play by the Press. It seems a sweeping statement to say it is the society’s best production to date.. To my mind,it taxed the capabilities of the producer less than any previous production. Once the stage was set little remained to do but to place the characters, the majority of whom “ stayed put ” the whole night. Once the placing of tha characters on the stage was satisfactory,-, the whole time and attention of the; producer couldbe devoted to the presentation.,and-interpretation of the play.With;-tj^ v ’|ead ( jjig';talent of the, society to form' d veryexperienced cast, little difficulty could have been experienced in this direction. In fairness to preceding performers, of whom more than vocal effort (excepting Lord Lodden) has been required, I write this letter of protest against such lavish reports.—l am, etc., Fate-minded, August 7.
