BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

LAMBS SELL AS HOGGETS The lamb pens at the Burnside yards were empty to-day, the few that were sent in being penned as hoggets with the sheep. Fat cattle met with quite a good sale, considering the large number forward, while store cattle realised last week’s values. There was a fairly large entry of 350 fat cattle, and the general quality was good. Some' specially good bullocks of weight and) quality were forward, and the representation of prime medium-weights was_ also good, while a small tail-end of lighter than usual was noticeable. The cows and heifers were very good, some of the latter being extra fuie in breeding and quality. The average in this sex was much superior to recent lots, although there was a tail-end of poor grades. The sale opened fairly firm at last week’s rates, remaining so for a short time. An easing set in later, prices for bullocks'' dropping 10s. Prime heavyweight bullocks sold up to 28s a 1001 b, and prime mediums from 31s to 325. Some of the extra good heifers realised up to 28s a 1001 b, and the average of good cows and) heifers was about 255.

There were a few trucks of nice medium wethers, and a fair number of close-woolled sorts, which were hardly good enough for butchers. Some specially good ewes were also penned, but there was only a small percentage of this grade, the majority being plain. The lambs were in the sheep pens, their quality being only fair. At the start of the sale there was a general rise of 3s a head, and it was thought that this increase would be maintained. Inferior quality vealers numbered about 40 head.
