ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY CONCERT
A particularly attractive programme has been arranged for tonight’s appearance, in the Town Hall Concert Chamber, of the Dunedin Orchestral Society, under the baton of Mr C. Roy Spackman. The chief offering is to be tho Haydn ‘ D Major Symphony ’ (No. 5), which, as far as is known, is being heard for the first time in this city. These delightfully unpretentious works are really enjoyable experiences, both to players and listeners, and it only remains to say that this symphony is a thoroughly characteristic example of tho master’s style. A new work of considerable interest is the virile ‘ African Dances ’ of Montague Bing (presented by Mrs John Hamer). More familiar, perhaps, will be the ‘ Nell Gwyn Dances,’
little gems by which the late Sir Edward German is affectionately remembered, and Elgar’s ‘Chanson de Matins ’ and ‘ Chanson clc Nuit ’ are deeply impressive little works. Mrs C. M. Barnett, the popular mezzo-soprano, is to be tho lady soloist, while vocal items arc also being contributed by Messrs Douglas Eutherford and John Edgar.
