SPECTACULAR PLAY. In the women’s singles quarter-finals the chief interest to-day centred in Mine Mathieu, whom it would not be unchivalrous to call a veteran. She created ono of few sensations of the tournament by beating the volatile Senorita Lizana, who had been tipped as the finalist. Mme Mathieu’s super, steadiness and scientific play were always too good for the Chilean, who fought hard. Mile Jedrzejowska’s terrific forehand and accuracy enabled her to gain a runaway victory over Miss Scriven. Miss Marble was behind 1-3 in the final set against Mme Sperling. She won the match chiefly by storming at the net, volleying, and drop-shotting. Miss Round, whose recent improvement is shewn by her easy defeat of Countess de la Vnldene yesterday, played the game of her life to-day, the title-holder. Miss Jacobs. The Englishwoman showed general superiority, and returned even Miss Jacobs’s famous chop shot with ease. She won by many points, raiding the net and killing Miss Jacobs’s returns. It was a surprise victory. (Received June 30, at 1.15 p.m.) MEN’S DOUBLES. —Third Round.— You Cramm and Henkel defeated Farqubarson and Kirby, 6-3, 0-6, 2-6, 7- 1 6-4.
