ORANGES.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —Upon picking up the ‘ Evening Star ’ last night 1 glanced at the “ stop press ” and saw at the bottom of the column that oranges were 50 a shilling, so immediately I sent little Willie to the first fruiterer’s for one shilling’s worth. You can imagine my surprise when little Willie came home with two oranges in the corner of a bag. I referred once again to the ' Star ’ and found where my error had occurred. Tho oranges at 50 for one shilling were in England, but oranges in New Zealand were 80s per case of 176 oranges. I at once looked up my ready reckoner and worked these oranges out at almost. 6d each, so, instead of going back to the fruiterer and throwing the oranges at him, I immediately sat down and wrote this letter to you. Can you explain the difference in the price of oranges in New Zealand and England? Surely it costs as much to take oranges to England as it does to bring them to New Zealand.—l am, etc., Mother of Sis., April 23.
