KING GEORGE V. FUND AND ST.

KILDA COUNCIL TO T iiis EDITOR.

Sir, —A fortnight ago 1 .wrote protesting against the St. Kilda Borough Council’s meagre contribution towards tlie above fund. My protest presumably fell on deaf ears, and 1 am surprised at the apathy of tho residents of tho borough regarding its contribution to this fund—“ Man’s inhumanity to man.” But now the cat is out of the bag. Our council is not a “ Labour Council so one councillor said during the discussion on why all the councillors did not get an invitation to the opening of “ Dunedin’s ” new Post Office. Personally, I fail to see why Cr Anderson's argument, that “ we are right in the heart of Mr Jones’s electorate,” counts, for anything. If it should, what a bevy of elected representatives should be seen at the opening of the new Mosgiel Post Office, because that is Mr Campbell’s electorate and includes all the Taieri, Peninsula, Port Chalmers, and Green Island. f do not know who all the invited guests were at the opening of Dunedin’s Post Office, but I make bold to say that the gathering was truly representative of Dunedin and the surrounding districts, and whoever was responsible for the issuing of the invitations deserves credit. As for. our worthy member, the Hon. Mr Jones, I make bold to say that ho is exceeding all expectations in the discharge of his Ministerial duties, that he bears no malice against any body, and that it is becoming a recognised fact that he is more than a politician; he is a statesman. As for Cr Carmen accusing Mr Jones of slighting the council, Cr Carman is the one on the council who should know that Mr Jones is foreign to that sort of business, and all I can say is that our councillors were expecting something to which they were not entitled. It will be time enough for them to be given the box seat when St. Kilda gets a new Post Office. In conclusion, I do sincerely wash to thank the councillor who so unwittingly paid the Labour Party a compliment by saying “ We are not a Labour Council.” I -would remind him that no Labour Council would ever besmirch its name by granting such a meagre amount to the King George Memorial Fund. But I wonder, is it because the fund was inaugurated by a Labour Government that our “ non-Labour Coum cil ” has decided to be so mean?—l am, etc., W. L. Ruiiledge. April 24.
