(Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) MOTORIST’S OFFENCE. At the afternoon, sitting Monty Joseph Murphy, for whom Mr E. J. Anderson appeared, pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to keep to the left of the centre line of the road._ After hearing evidence the Magistrate said it appeared that an offence had been" committed. The defendant was convicted and fined £3 and costs (£1 12s), CHARGE DISMISSED. Joseph, Marks. (Mr B. S. Irwin) pleaded not guilty to a charge of giving a false alarm of fire. Evidence was given by two men that they had seen a middle-aged man approach a fire alarm box in Union street, near the' North Ground about midnight on January 19. Shortly afterwards the fire engine turned out to the vicinity. They followed the man who had been near the box, and later informed an on the fire engine as it was returning to the station. Evidence was also given by the fireman who accosted the man pointed out to him by one of the previous witnesses and by the constable who had taken a statement from tho defendant denying the offence. In evidence, the defendant stated that immediately after he had been accused he went back to the Dunedin North Police Station of his own free will and made a statement to the constable. . The Magistrate said that the case was suspicious, but the evidence was not conclusive, and the information would be dismissed.
