FISHING RESEARCH
URGENT DOMINION REQUIREMENT [Pee United Press Association.] ROTORUA, February 14. The opinion that scientific research is urgently required to maintain New Zealand’s fisheries, both salt water and fresh, was expressed by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) in the course of an interview before his departure from Rotorua yesterday. The Minister mentioned that the Government had decided to make fish research a State activity, and said that the work would bo closely prosecuted. He had gone very thoroughly into the position of the country’s fisheries, and he was satisfied that New Zealand had exhausted its knowledge of its salt water and fresh water fish. As an instance, he had found no set of anglers whose views were alike when asked for their opinions regarding an improvement of fresh water fishing. He was satisfied that intense research was now necessary to guide the authorities in the proper development of the fisheries. The Fish Research Department established by the Government was working well, and would, he felt sure, he of great value to the country. It would be a calamity if New Zealand’s fishing deteriorated.
