SATURDAY’S CRICKET

As a result of the first series of matches in the second round of the competition, Carisbrook A and, Albion hold the leading positions, with the final matches to be decided on March 6 and 13. Should the leaders be matched, an outright win would have to be secured by Albion to. carry off the honours, as a first-innings victory would bring them level with Carisbrook. - All matches on Saturday were played under the most unfavourable * conditions. Grange could only amass a total of 180 in reply to 414 by Carisbrook A, despite a fine fighting innings by Knight (32) and Elmes (64). ' Grange followed on, Chettleburgb con- - tribnting the excellent total of 82 undefeated). Albion was rather lucky to account for Kaikorai, who failed by only three runs to catch Albion’s first innings total of 257, This was principally due to an aggressive knock by Talbot for 80. Kaikorai were unlucky in that Smales, who had commenced his innings the previous week failed to appear at the start of the second day’s play. A single run decided the issue m the University-Carisbrook B game. Old Boys won comfortably ,by seven wickets to gain eight points from Dunedin. HONOURS LIST BATTING T. Chettleburgh (Grange), 82 not out. R. O. Talbot (Kaikorai), 80. L. Groves (H. 5.0.8.), 70. C. Elmes (Grange), 64. Ibbotson (University) 54. G. Mills (H. 5.0.8.), 46. R. Douglas (Dunedin), 44 not out. Dotting (Carisbrook B), 42. BOWLING A. Stevenson (Carisbrook B), three for 7. R. Mahony (H. 5.0.8.), three for 12. Macassey (Dunedin), six for 43. J. Nimmo (Carisbrook .A), seven for 60. L. Groves (H. 5.0.8.), three for 25. A. Graham (H. 5.0.8.), two for 16. R. Douglas (Dunedin), four for 61. S. Lambert (Carisbrook B), four for 54. A BRILLIANT PARTNERSHIP CHETTLEBURGH AND GALLAND BAT FINELY Heavy rains during the week had softened the wicket at Carisbrook con- ■ siderably, and with a strong southwesterly wind blowing all afternoon across it, the pitch was in poor order, and not at all conductive to bright, cricket. It played true, however, only a few isolated balls keeping, low, with few rising above normal height. The outfield was damp and very slow, forcing the batsmen to run twos and threes for shots that on an ordinary day would have been certain fours. Knowles (16) and Dey (2) resumed for Grange, who had lost three, wickets for 33 on the first day. Neither lasted long, Knowles being dismissed before he had added a run, while Day finished with five. Knight and Galland carried on. The latter was the first to leave, with four to his credit. He opened very unsteadily, facing Nimmo, and his judgment was faulty. He was dropped at first slip off this bpwler, and then employed the same stroke for the next ball. Fraser took him finely with a two-handed catch above his head. Knight was going well, with 102 on the board, when he snicked a swiftly-rising ball to Hercus, ho snapped up the catch in fine style. Knight’s tally of 32 included four 4’s. When he was partnered with Elmes the score rose rapidly from 110 to 152.

Carisbrook A Maintain Lead TWO NARROW WINS —ALBION BY THREE RUNS, university BY SINGLE RUN—OLD BOYS AND CARISBROOK A HAVE EASY VICTORIES.

■ Chettleburgh joined Elmes, who was playing an excellent knock. Dunning, who was not particularly dangerous on the day, had him on the defensive, and beat him badly on two occasions. He was dropped by Frank Kerr fit long leg, attempting a big hit off this bowler, but settled down immediately after to gather three successive fours from Nimmo. Finally he played inside a yorker from Dunning, haying hit nine fours in the compilation of his 64. Chettleburgh had opened steadily and soon passed double figures. He brought 140 up with a square cut off Fraser for four. Shortly after associated with Blair, he was dropped at square leg by Dunning off Fraser. He had added 24 by bright cricket when Nimmo, who had placed the first two balls of the over past the leg stump, bowled him one on the off which came back just enough to beat the bat. Blair and Lemin added eight to bring the total to 180, before Lemin was nicely taken by Campbell at silly mid-on off Nimmo. It was a straight ball which he lifted by screwing round on his back foot. , ' Chettleburgh and Knight opened when Grange followed on after the adjournment. >The former signalised his return to the crease by lifting Dunning over the leg fence. In the next over, Knight had his off pin carried away by Nimmo off a ball of nice length, having contributed 11. With 49 registered, Toomey put a very high one to Campbell at silly mid-off. Elmes came ijj, and made practically the same stroke ’to be taken by Herons, who ran round to take a higjh catch nicely. Chettleburgh and Galland became associated in the best partnership of the day, both being undefeated at six o’clock, when play closed. Results:— CARISBROOK A. First innings ... ... 414 GRANGE. EIGHT POINTS TO OLD BOYS WICKET PLAYS POORLY The wicket was in poor shape at Tonga Park on Saturday, when Old Boys resumed their first innings. Dunedin, who took first strike on the first day, made 149, and Old Boys had lost five wickets for 151. The remaining five wickets fell for 31 runs, the collapse being i. 'inly due to the fine bowling of Macassey, who took six wickets for 43.

In their second strike Dunedin compiled 98, leaving Old Boys to make 66 runs for an eight-point win. The opening pair went to the crease at 6.15 p.m., and 70 runs were on the board in less than an hour to give Old Boys victory. Payne attacked the bowling aggressively to finish with 30 runs to his credit. Details:— DUNEDIN. First innings ... -... 149 Second Innings. UNIVERSITY WINS VICTORY BY ONE RUN University secured a win against Carisbrook B by the narrow margin of one run on the University Oval. At the close of the first day’s play the winners had made 99 for four wickets, while in its first innings Carisbrook put up the total of 153, Ibbotson and Gowland being still at the wickets. After adding another one to his score, Gowland whs bowled, being replaced by Henderson. This pair carried the total to .139 before Boddington dismissed Ibbotson with 56 to his credit. When Henderson went immediately afterwards, University had to make 14 to win, and three wickets were still in hand. The chances looked black when the next two wickets fell for a single, but a determined stand by Christie and Lawson evened the scores. The final run came when the bowler failed to field the ball and the batsmen reached safety just in time. Christie was run out two balls later. Carisbrook again went in and declared with five wickets down for 112 in an attempt to force an outright win". University had been in for barely half an hour when rain commenced to fall, and stumps were drawn with the score standing at 29 for one wicket. LAST WICKET WIN FIVE RUNS TO SPARE A fine last-wicket stand by Cook and Scott was the feature of the match between Albion and Kaikorai at Logan Park. The game went to Albion with 5 runs to spare. Kaikorai batted one man short. The cold wind made conditions unpleasant, while on one occasion rain interrupted play. Talbot, who last

week scored 5, brought his total to 80 after a particularly fine exhibition of cricket. Allen’s first ball after the tea interval saw him out Ibw. M'Gregor went in the same manner after scoring 32. The partnership was responsible for 98 runs being added to the total. Constable was caught after putting on another 20, while Rennick was run out for 10.
