FAMOUS GUIDE DEAD
Chamonix is mourning the death of one of its oldest members of the famous Company of Guides, Joseph Aristide Simon, aged 80, has just passed away. During his long career as a guide he had many famous exploits to his credit. The most famous of all was the successful climb of the Aiguille de la Republique, 10,824 ft, in company with a well-known French climber. To reach the top he was obliged to use a crossbow to shoot a line over the last crag. This was in 1904, and it was 20 years before the second successful ascension. Many of the peaks round Chamonix bear the names of English climbers who were the first to ascend them, and the guides of Chamonix have an admiration for Englishmen which is flattering. Whympler, the great English climber and pioneer of the famous mountains of the Jura, lies buried at Chamonix, and his grave is tended by the Company of Guides.
