COMMUNISM CONDEMNED.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The vicious diatribe against the statement of a Catholic bishop emanating from the pen of Mr A. B. Powell is a first-class example of the appeal to popular ignorance and gullibility which indicates the mental and moral weakness of Communist theories. The disturbing and dangerous condition of the world to-day is entirely due to the unbridled passions of men in open revolt to the Lord of all. The fearful results are to be seen in the enslavement of the Russian and the Mexican working'folk, and in a present attempt to impose the brutal Communist slavery on a free nation. Mr A. B. Powell is not biased—of course not. His thoughtful and restrained letter' leaves no doubt on that bead. As a reader of the ‘ Golden Age ’ or its Russian relatives, he is not ignorant either. But there is a lower depth of immoral education than that of the, simple reader. It is exercised by those who try to force others to accept on faith statements they themselves know can never be proved. It is to this company that Mr A. B. Powell belongs, for his attack on Catholicism is false in everv word and implication. Worse than that., it is a complete perversion of the truth. Anyone who makes use of healthy reasoning powers, applying them to the examining of objective facts, will find that Communism is the principle immoral social movement in the world, the sure way of ending any national or rational freedom. Its immediate aim is the development of the principle of the “ Popular Front ” to its fullest extent as a step towards the ultimate universal dictatorship, of .Stalin or the heir apparent, .Voroshiloff. These aims are the highest .that can. actuate the comrades, and their achievement requires the liquidation of all forms of free government. Unlike Mr A. B. Powell, Communists are biased. They are biased in favour of their own opinions, in favour of unscrupulous tenacity of purpose, and are absolutely devoted to the usurpation of authority by the ambitious and greedy Russian godless. They have no open quarrel with religion as such, but they cleverly distinguish between nondescript religion as a harmless private pastime, and the Catholic Church the the effective international antidote to common imnational barbarism.—l am, etc., Sol von.
