FRIDAY, MAY 29. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. .Tames Gibbons was fined 12s Gd, seven days being allowed in which to pay the fine. THEFT OP CLOTHES. Eric Stanley Mills (23) appeared for sentence on two charges of stealing clothes from a boarding house in Cumberland street. After hearing the reports, the Magistrate remanded Mills in custody for a further week in order that he might be medically examined. TWO YEARS’ PROBATION. A girl of 19 years was admitted to probation for two years when she appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing a gold ring. Her name was suppressed. UNLIGHTED CYCLES. Albert Burns and Clifford John Garland were fined 5s and costs for riding cycles without lights. RIDING ON FOOTPATH. Riding bicycles on a footpath cost William Thomas Brinssell and Alfred Evans 6s and costs. CHIMNEYS ON FIRE. Victor Edward Galway and Alexander Sligo were fined 5s and costs for allowing chimneys, to catch fire. FALSE DECLARATIONS. John Brown pleaded guilty to two charges of making a false declaration under the Unemployment Act. Detective Russell said that on March 31 and April 7 accused, who was on sustenance, made a .declaration of income which stated that his income for the previous seven days was nil. 'lhis was found to be incorrect. Brown had also made a false statement under the Justices of the Peace Act. He had obtained £2 11s from the Labour Department for sustenance. When interviewed accused had been quite candid. Mr C. J. L. White, who appeared for Brown, said that he was a young married man and a seaman by occupation. He had earned small sums of money in the past, but had always accounted for them to the department. Although there were two charges, they related only to one period of employment. On this occasion Brown had been particularly pushed for money and required it for clothing and to have teeth extracted. The defendant was a first offender, and counsel understood that the department would protect itself regarding the refund. On the first charge Brown was fined 40s and costs, the other charge being withdrawn. Four weeks was allowed for the payment of the fine. NO LICENSE. James Burrowes and Harold Hardy, who appeared voluntarily, admitted charges of shooting pukeko without a license and were fined £5 and costs. “ MORE CANDID THAN MOST.” Remarking that he was more candid than most offenders, tho Magistrate fined Ernest William Chandler 30s and costs (3s) for speeding along the Main South road. Chandler’s excuse was that his excessive speed was due to the purchasing of a new car after possessing a slower vehicle. MOTORING OFFENCES. Angus Alfred Mackay, charged with using a car with defective brakes, was fined 10s and costs. James Lloyd Ferris, who failed to give way to traffic approaching on the right and collided with a cyclist, was fined £2 and costs. John Callum Stevenson, who admitted failing to keep to the centre line of Princes street, was fined £2 10s and costs. He also pleaded guilty to passing a stationary tramcar, and was convicted only. Maurice Kenneth Glover was fined 10s and costs for riding an unlighted motor cycle. William Rutherford Hamilton and Albert Edward Rayment, who left their cars unattended in maimstreets on Friday nights, were fined 10s and costs. John Henry G. Davidson, who exceeded tho speed limit of 25 miles an hour for his type of lorry, was fined 30 s and costs

Further evidence was heard in the case in which Norman Western Sanders (Mr E. J. Anderson) pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving. Tho case was still proceeding when the luncheon adjournment was taken.
