SOUTH ISLAND REGATTA NEXT SATURDAY’S FIXTURE The South Island Regatta Committee met at Port Chalmers to make final arrangements for the regatta to be held at Port Chalmers on February 8. The Secretary reported that excellent entries had been received for all events. Gratification was expressed of the support received from, southern and northern oarsmen. Motor boat and yacht entries had surpassed all expectations. It was reported that, although Miss met with a mishap during the running of the Masport Cup at Picton, she would be a certain starter in the special invitation match race. Miss Victory’s owner also notified the committee that his boat had received her final tune-up and would enter for the race. In connection with this event the committee expressed a wish that all heat owners and visitors to the regatta should refrain from cruising on or near the special course provided for this event, which is timed to start at 4 o’clock. The senior fours rowing event should provide one of the chief attractions of the day. The committee has decided to row this event in clinker boats, as it was ascertained that only one club in Southland possessed a best-and-best boat. The senior event will be contested over a IJ-mile course; all other rowing events will be rowed over a mile course. It ivas reported that the Railway Department had made special train and bus arrangements for the regatta. The rowing programme of nine events, for' which prize money totalling £B6 has been devoted, has attracted large entries from the four local clubs, as well as from the Invercargill, Invercargill Railway, Awarua, Oamaru, and Timaru Clubs. The only clubs present at the previous regatta which will not he represented on this occasion are Akaroa and Cure (Kaiapoi), whose members are unable to travel at this time on account of a busy harvesting season. On the da; 7 of the regatta the Ruahino is expected to be in port, and it is proposed to make her the flagship for the occasion, while the committee is indebted 1o Mr J. W. Duncan for the use of the tug Southland, which will ho utilised as a judges’ and entertaining boat. LAWN TENNIS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ADELAIDE, January 31.
