SANDERS CUP

THIRD RACE WON BY AUCKLAND [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 31. For the second morning in succession the time limit of three hours snatched victory from Aileen, Auckland’s representative in the contest for the Sanders Cup. The third race was started off Bastion Point at 10.14 a.m. to-day and Auckland crossed the finishing line Imin 4sec after the expiry of the time limit. The race was resailed in the afternoon and Auckland won comfortably from Canterbury. The morning race was over a windward and leeward course, and, although abandoned, was full of incident. There was a light northerly wind. Wellington was first away, followed closely by Canterbury, Auckland, and Otago. Southland beat the gun and lost valuable time in recrossing the lino. On the beat to the channel buoy Canterbury worked out a good lead, but rounded the mark on the wrong side. It was not until Wellington was manoeuvering to round that the Canterbury skipper realised his mistake and had to beat back to the buoy against a strong tide, losing over eight minutes and rounding last. Until Canterbury reached the mark the first time Wellington had been a close second. Auckland, however, coming down on the starboard tack, forced Wellington about. Wellington then misjudged the tide and finally rounded the buoy 20seo astern of Auckland. Otago and Southland were some • five minutes later. Auckland completed the second round four minutes in the lead from Wellington, which was followed by Otago and Southland, and, a long way astern, Canterbury. Beating to windward, Wellington came out on top and had 33sec in hand from Auckland at the last turn. It was now a race against time. The boats had 16 minutes to run miles with spinnakers set. Auckland gradually closed with Wellington, when suddenly the southerner’s spinnaker halyard slipped and the sail fell in the water. Auckland forged ahead, but was still some 200yds from the line when the time expired. The afternoon race was the least exciting, yet it was a decided one. Canterbury and Auckland crossed the line -together, followed by Southland, Otago, and Wellington. Auckland worked to windward and stood across the ebb tide to North Head. Otago followed suit, but the other three boats worked in mid channel. At the first mark Auckland had a lead of 18soc from Canterbury, which was followed by Southland, Otago, and Wellington. 'On the second beat to windward Auckland again worked the North Shore to advantage, while Wellington overhauled Otago and Southland. At the completion of the second round Auckland had a lead of Imin 26scc from Canterbury, which was over 2min ahead of Wellington. On the last lap Auckland further improved her position. The race was started at 3, and the finishing times were:— Auckland (Aileen), "5h 26min 20sec 1 Canterbury (Avenger), 5h 28min 33sec ... ... 2 Wellington (Lavina), 6h 30min 35sec 3 Otago (Val), 5h 33min 26sec ... 4 Southland (Irene), 5h 33min 62seo 5 Canterbury,, Wellington, and Auckland have now each secured a win. The fourth race of the series will be held over a triangular course, commencing at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning.
