The best game of the day in the Dominion croquet tourney was the final of the men’s championship, in which H. P. Stratton (Hastings) produced his best form to beat F. O. Bryan (Palmerston North) in two thrilling games, played in the hottest part ot the day. Under the difficult conditions the breaks made were the more creditable. NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS A fortnight from to-day the New Zealand national swimming championships will be commenced in Dunedin, and present indications are that the meeting will he one of the greatest ever held in New Zealand. Much interest will centre on the showings of Peter Mathieson, the brilliant back stroke exponent, and W. J. Jarvis. Speculation is rife as to the chances of Noel Crump, Robert Frankham, and Peter Hannan, of Auckland, of depriving Jarvis of his 100yds and 220yds titles, but Jarvis’s supporters are confident that he will reproduce his best form. Mathieson’s cnief opposition will come from the brillant Rotorua Maori, Billy Whareaitu, a former titleholder, while that great all-round exponent, L. J. Moorhouse, is also said to bo competing. L. Smith, the greatest breast stroke swimmer New Zealand has produced, will defend his 220yds title, and representative fields will contest the distance events, in which much interest will centre on the efforts of the former Olympic representative, D. P. Lindsay, to wrest the half-mile title from J. D. O’Driscoll (Otago), and the mile from R. Watkins (Hawke’s Bay). The women’s events should be productive of much interest, with such performers as Misses Mona Leydon (New Zealand re-cord-holder), Nancy Ludlow and Judith Webster (Auckland), Edna Rainey (Hawke’s Bay), Ngaire Hughes (Canterbury) j Maxine Mathieson and Patty Sporle (Otago), and Nancy Basstian (Southland) playing a leading part. The carnival will open with preliminaries on Saturday afternoon, February 15, at 2.30, and evening sessions will be held on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday following, at 7.45 o’clock, the official opening ceremony being performed by the mayor (Rev.
