THE VAUDEVILLE

“GAIETIES" SECOND PROGRAMME Stanley M'Kay’s “ Gaieties of 1955 ” completed the first successful week of its Dunedin season at His Majesty’s Theatre last night, when another happy audience was kept thoroughly amused with a variety programme of both quality and quantity. The second programme was introduced to-day, under the title of ‘ Happy Miss Revue,’ a production which has proved popular in Australian and also in the leading northern cities of New Zealand. There was a gift matinee this afternoon, when, in addition to the revue, several items of special appeal to children were staged by Frank Perrin and Ike Delavalc, the company’s popular English and Jewish comedians. A gift of a bicycle was made to one of the chili dree present, while .numerous other presents were also distributed amongst the audience. Many specialties are staged in the now show, including Trampo, the hobo, who sleeps, juggles, and does the seemingly impossible on a slender clothes line. This act created a furore at the New Tivoli and Regent Theatres, Sydney. Another offering is the posing of the Grecians, whose living replicas of famous statuary are impressive. In addition to posing, they present some amazing band balancing, Laurila, the graceful exponent of Eastern and modern dancing, presents something out of the ordinary in the poetry of motion. Her item is billed as ‘ The Mirth of Dancing,’ and illustrates how body and arm movements to music originated. Her only accompaniments in the strange African dance are drums and cymbals, which give a weird effect to a dance in which one can visualise hordes of savages expressing their emotions by gestures, body bending, and stamping, of feet. Frank Perrin and Ike Delavale, the comedians, have much to do in the new production. The sketches in which they figure prominently are ‘ The Hold Up.’ ‘ Buying a Theatre.’ ‘ The K.C. at Home.’ ‘ Modern Curiosity,’ ‘ The New Arrival.’ 1 Wills and Ways,’ ' The Had Story.’ and ‘Mr Nobody.’ A star item is the sketch ‘ Mother Kellv’s Doorstep.’ with Nell Fleming the clever American comedienne, as Mrs Kelly. The numerous son" scenns. featuring Victor Burke, Ada Lynn, and •Tnlie Adair, include ‘ The Shadow Waltz ’ and an ‘ Indian Idyll.* Frank Perrin is seen at his best in ‘ Ali Baba’s Camel.’ an Pastern fantasy, and in a. burlesque of 1 Nanoleon.’ The Yodelling Newtons irT - ""! ’■'"w 'to"" Dot Arnold assists in the fun department. Plivl! ami Verna s'mw how 1-ip dancing is done, and the Gaieties Fallot of snn-khsc'l Australian* is prominent throughout the production.
