WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION
SOUTH DUNEDIN BRANCH The annual meeting of the above took place on Thursday afternoon in the Wesley school room, Mrs Donald-, sou presiding. Mrs Duxfield, vicepresident of the Wanganui W.C.T.U., was welcomed as a _ visitor andresponded, afterwards giving a short address on work in the Wanganui district. The Bands of Hope are there worked on an interdenominational line, several denominations being each responsible for a programme and ensuring attention to the educational side by a repetition of the company rule by the children at the outset. This rule enforces orderly conduct and attention. In the adult union the note of optimism is struck, although at times the forces arrayed against the aims and ideals of the W.C.T.U. provoke discouragement. They were abandoning the term “ Prohibition,” which antagonises people and really failed to express the aim and spirit of no-license advocates, and were adopting _ the slogan “Abolition,, of the Liquor Traffic ” in its place. ' Miss Gray, district secretary, had been invited to take the chair during the election of officers, but gave place to Mrs Duxfield.- whose short address was thoroughly appreciated. The various superintendents having given their reports, and those of the treasurer and the secretary having been read and adopted, the election of officers was proceeded with, resulting as follows: —President, -Mri Donaldson: vice-presidents. Mesdamos Hinton and Williamson ; crade roll superintendent, Mrs Williamson; white ribbon, Mrs Norwood; evangelistic. Mrs Felling; secretary. Miss McCarthy; treasurer, Mrs Powell.
