A SMASHING BULLET
WILL PIERCE THE “TIN HAT" BRITAIN’S NEW INVENTION. LONDON, August 30. A bullet which, equipped with an aluminium cap, can smash its way through a steel plate on which an ordinary service bullet scarcely makes a mark, has just been perfected here. Steel helmets are no protection whatever against it. Every soldier supplied with this bullet will immediately become a danger to any armoured car or tank. The new bullet has been perfected by the Research' Council of National Defence after several years of experimental work. It is a high velocity light bullet capable of being fired from a rifle with a muzzle velocity of 6,000 ft _a second, more than three times as high as the muzzle velocity of the ordinary service rifle. At present the British Army is using the same rifle as during the war, but will shortly be rearmed with an entirely new rifle.
