CLAN REVIVAL

THE CAMERONS PROPOSAL TO UNITE. LONDOIJ, August 28. The Marquess of Lothian’s plea to the National Trust to safeguard the historic private houses of the country—he suggested that they should, in approved cases, be freed from death duties—lands interest to a proposal by Captain E. P. Cameron, commander of the Orient liner Orama, which incidentally would safeguard the ancestral estates of the chief of the Clan Cameron, Lochiel. Captain Cameron’s primary object is to revive in modern form the glories of his clan. He suggests that everyone bearing the name of Cameron should be enrolled as a member of the ;clan, and should pay a subscription to the Cameron Society in Scotland, and that local Cameron societies should be established throughout the world in contact with the parent society in Scotland. He proposes that all members should be given a certificate signed by Lochiel (the present chief is Colonel Donald Walter Cameron) that all should be sworn to loyalty to the chief, that all should have the privilege of paying homage to the chief at stated times, and that Achnacarry, the chief’s domain, should be assigned as the gathering place of the clan. Incidental to his plan is the suggestion that part of the funds should be devoted to the upkeep of the estate of Lochiel, especially with regard to the payment of death duties. Captain Cameron has received a letter from Lochiel welcoming the scheme, though it is one which, in view of the personal implication, he cannot take up himself. He is aware, he says, that the clan regard Achnacarry as their headquarters, and it has always given the Lochiel family gfeat pleasure to keep the flag flying there.
