Deep feeling has been aroused, both in union circles and among mill owneis, over the deaths in the strike. The mill owners’ representatives claim that picketers fired on workers, precipitating a clash, while the unionists allege that workers, .angered because picketers sought to close a mill, fired into the backs of picketers. Mr Gorman declared that'the strikers will agree to arbitration only after every mill has been closed. “We have nothing to lose, and out people would rather starve striking than starve working. If the recommendations of the President’s Mediation Board fail to meet our expectations the strike will continue.” He estimated that 475,000 operatives in all branches of tho industry were striking. Tho strikers, whose fimds are admittedly low, have bepn heartened by the announcement of a donation of 100,000dol by the New York Cloak and Suitmakers’ Union. The situation developed another serious aspect to-night, when 100,000 cotton garment workers wero ordered to strike on October 1 because of the employers’ refusal to obey President Roosevelt’s order to raise wages and reduce hours.
