AMERICAN NAVY
EVACUATION OF FAR EASTERN BASES ADVICE OF EXPERTS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 15. Tho ‘ Daily Telegraph’s ’ naval correspondent says: “The United States, acting on the advice of experts, is contemplating tho evacuation of all its fleet' bases in Far Eastern waters, and the withdrawal of the Asiatic squadron now in the Philippines. Tho latter move is linked with the forthcoming granting of independence to the Philippines. Naval experts have for many years emphasised the grave risks incurred in retaining islands that could not be defended in case of war with Japan, and the inevitable loss in the initial stage of tho campaign would constitute a moral reverse of tho first magnitude. The Philippine squadron has long been known as the ‘ live bait ’ squadron or the 1 suicide fleet.’ ”
