FIRE IN A CHURCH
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DOME (Fsb United Peeei Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, May 16. Damage totalling several hundred pounds was caused this morning by a fire in St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Colombo street, Sydenham. Prompt action by the brigade confined the damage principally to the rear of the building, but the loss to the churcn is considerable, as two pianos N are affected by fire and water. A communion set presented at the foundation of the church in 1850 was blackened by the flames, and the records were charred. The walls separating the kitchen from the vestry and the rafters were destroyed. The church proper though filled with smoke escaped damage. The cause of the outbreak is not known, but it is believed to have started in the kitchen, where supper had been prepared for a meeting last evening.
