ECCLEFECHAN WINS AGAIN

The Southland Racing Club’s Winter Meeting was concluded in dull, showery weather, but there was again a good attendance. The track was hard. The totalisator handled £7,469 10s, against £7,149 10s last year. The total for the meeting was £13,619, agsAnst £13,243 last year. Detailed results; — MYHOSS HANDICAP, SOsoys. 7f. 6-6—Mr J. Double Shot came on the scene, and took charge to run homo an easy winner by a length and a-half from First Song, with Brown Pearl three-quarters of a length away. Time, Imin 35 l-ssec. Master Anomaly and Clara Bow made the running to the straight, Waterpower losing a lot of ground at the start. She made up ground well, and put in a great run, but just failed to reach Master Anomaly by a neck. Mayam was two lengths and a-half away, and then Miss Redowa. Time, Imin 20 4-ssec. Palmary finished very fast from the rear, but Toreador hung on to beat him by half a length. Signaller was two lengths away, and then Black Duke, Time, 2min 18 4-ssec. Time, Imm 49 l-ssec. _______ notes oh the fixture [By St. Clair.] Heavy rain fell early in the morning and seriously interfered with the attendance at the second day of the Southland Racing Club s Winter Meeting which brought to a close the racing and trotting seasouin the southern province for 1933-34 The gate receipts amounted to £248 lbs making. £449 4s 6d for the meeting, an increase of £2O 4s on last year s figures. The track was very heavy and slow, and cut up badly. Most of the horses that raced well on the previous day again got into the money, and outside two instances horses raced well up to form. At least two of the previous day’s winners were allowed to return false prices. £3,615 was handled at tho win and £3,854 10s at.the, place machine, the total, £7,469 being £320 better than last year, and making the total for the meeting £13,619, an increase of £376, * * * * First Song (£46 and £sl), Lady Kate (£221 and £33s), Pmk Paper (£2O and-£2l), Brown Pearl (£lB and £2B), and Jacobin (£l3 and £l6) were tho best backed in poor pools on the Myross Hack Handicap. From an excellent line Pink Paper and Johnny were the first to show out, but after a couple of furlongs First Song ran up and joined Pmk Paper, with Bay Biddy and Johnny next. At

the far turn First Song was just clear from Bay Biddy, with Johnny Pompax and Lady Kate. First Song, was first into the straight from Bay Biddy, Double Shot, Pompax, Johnny, and Brown Pearl. Double Shot cut down the leaders in the run hoyic, and beat his stable mate, First Song, by a length and a-half. Brown Pearl was a neck off third, followed by Jacobin, Pompax, and Lady Kate. The winner is by Agrion from Half a Brace, and had only £5 10s and £ll 10s invested on his chances. * * * * For the Invercargill Harness Trot Vacation (£77s and £74), Bright Voyage (£7l and £74s), Mishap (£54.) and £64s), Ready Money (£sls and £77s), and Black Shadow (£44s and £s7s) were best backed. Mishap, Desert Cloud, and Morven Girl lost a lot of ground at the start, and Ready Money led Bright Voyage, Hard Times, and Vacation through the straight. At the end of six furlongs Ready Mouoy was just in front of Mishap, who made up the ground she lost at the start very quickly, and behind them were Bright Voyage, Hard Times, Master Lee, and Black Shadow. Ihe last-named ran round the leaders and led round the far turn from Mishap, who broke shortly afterwards. Ready Money, Bright; Voyage, and Vacation. Black Shadow led Master Lee across the top, and Master Lee, Bright Voyage, and Vacation were on even terms turning for home, just in front of Black Shadow. In the run home Master Lee stayed on best, and won by a length and a-half from Bright Voyage, who heat Vacation by a neck. Hard limes and Ready Money were next. * * * * Water Power (£l5B and £l2Bs), Master Anomaly, by Anomaly—Take Down (£76 and £74), Mayam (£69s and £79), and Miss Redowa (£54 and £7ss) were the best backed in the President’s Handicap. The favourite lost about three lengths at the start from which Master Anomaly and Clara Bow led out from Miss Redowa. Racing round the far turn Master Anomaly and Clara Bow were racing on even terms two lengths dear of Miss Redowa, All Humbug, and Mayam, who were also racing on even terms. Master Anomaly led into the straight from Clara Bow, Mayam, and Miss Redowa, the favourite lying second last. She put in another good turn in the straight, and only failed by a neck to reach Master Anomaly. Mayam was thre lengths away third with Miss Redowa and First Song next. * * * * The bracketed pair French Fleet and Calham (£BB and £80), Umtali (£6Bs and £7O), and Dunmure (£6ss and £s3s) were the best backed in the Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase Handicap. Calham led Dunmure and Ecclefechan over the first obstacles, the stand double, and after the next fence had been negotiated French Fleet took up the role of pacemaker and led Ecclefechau and Calham, who were jumping together a couple of lengths clear of Dunmure. This order was maintained for a round, the only incident by the way was when Dunmure hit the first fence of the stand double, and his rider, V. Langford, made a clever recovery. French Fleet carried on from Calharii and Ecclefechau to the end of two miles, then Dunmure took charge and followed by Ecclefechau led across the top from Calham and Cultivator. After jumping the second last fence Ecclefechan headed Dunmure and led him over the last fence, where Calham and Quinopal were handy. Ecclefechan drew right away on the flat to win by eight lengths from Dunmure, whose form was a striking improvement on the previous day’s. Quinopal was three lengths off third, a length in front of Calham, and Cultivator and French Fleet were next. Umtali completed tho course, but was a bad last. * * * * Signaller (£lo4s and £101), Palmary (£B7 and £94), and Toreador, by Some Boy ll.—Spanish Princess (£73 and £73) were the best fancied in the Awarua Handicap. Toreador led Black Duke, Smuggler, and Jack a Dandy for nearly six furlongs, then Smuggler dropped out, and Toreador led Black Duke, Jack a Dandy, and Signaller, round the far turn. Racing across the top Toreador was only a neck in front of Black Duke, with Signaller on the outside, and Palmary getting up on the rails. Toreador was first into the straight from Black Diike, Signaller, and Palmarv.. The latter continued his good run* on tho rails, but just failed by a neck to reach Toreador. Signaller was two lengths away third, half a length in front of Black Duke. The Smuggler was last. * 5* * * Honest Maid (£lols and £94), Valiska (£7B and £79s), Pink Paper (£69 a’tid £s7s), Ada (£44s and £62), and Great Weather (£25 and £39s) were the best backed for the Bluff Hack Handicap. When the field settled down Insolvency was in charge from Ada, Conca de Oro. and Wynwood. At the end of three furlongs Insolvency was still in front, with Conca de Ore, Ada, Wynwood, and Garnish handy. After ■rounding the far turn Conca de Oro joined Insolvency, and a little later on Wynwood ran up to Conca de Oro, with Insolvency, Valiska, Garnish, and Ada next. Conca de Oro led Wynwood Valiska, and Garnish into the straight, and in the run home Garnish beat Conca de Oro by a length. Valiska was half a length away, a neck in front of Ada. , ~ , The winner is by Ornamentation from Rose Brook (Australian bred), and had £33 and £4B invested on his chance. * * ' * * Mountain Jewel, by Blue Mountain Kins— Stronghold mare (£2oos and £l3ls) and Big Author (£159 and £121) carried the heavy wagering in the Dash Saddle Test, ’Weary Voyage (£7B and £7Bs) and Ozanam (£SB and £s6s) being the best backed of the Big Author failed to strike his gait, and Ready Money led Red King and Weary Voyage through the straight. Entering the back stretch Mannco Lee had taken charge from Ready Money, Ozanam, Weary Voyage, Red King and Mountain Jewel. The lastnamed moved up racing along the back, and at the far turn was just behind Manrico Leo and Ready Money. Two furlongs from home Mountain Jewel took charge and ran homo an easy winner by three lengths from Manrico Lee, who beat Red King by five lengths. Weary Voyage and Erm s Chief were next. * * * * Great Shot (£254 and £145), Red Boa (£ll9 and £ll3s), Totolomai (113$ and £lo2s), and Black Duke (£99s and £94) were the best backed for the W 7 iliter Oaks Handicap. The race would have been started sharp on schedule time but for Great Shot and Black Duke causing trouble. Great Shot and Totolomai were followed over the first half-mile by Red Boa, then tho favourite drew clear and Miss Redowa ran'into second place.
