NOTES ON THE RAGING [Special to the ‘Star.’] The Oamaru Trotting Club experienced a most successful meeting on Saturday, when the weather was perfect. and the track in capital order. The race between the pacing champions drew a big crowd, and the greatest enthusiasm was displayed. Harold Logan on this occasion showed undoubted superiority over his three opponents. The eleven acceptors paraded for the Invitation Handicap, and Prince Harvester and Norma Bingen, practically monopolised the betting, _ the former carrying twice as many tickets as the third fancy, Renegade. Patty Todd took up the running at the start, and before the field had gone three furlongs Prince Harvester was in second place, followed by Jacob, Mahinerangi, Renegade, Norma Bingen, and Gold Standard. With half the journey gone the order was the same, but the field had closed up. With half a mile to go Prince Harvester was sailing along nicely in front, and looked a likely winner. At the turn into the straight Norma Bingen was handy to the leader, and she soon settled the pretensions of Prince Harvester, who, however, had enough in reserve to stall off determined challenges of Jacob and Marfaret Parrish, who were followed homo y Patty Todd and Renegade. The winner made a mistake at the start of ,the race, .and lost a lot of ground, but once into her stride she trotted very fast, although at times inclined to pace. , Prince Harvester had every chance, for he was with the leaders early in the race, but did not put much dash into his work in the final stages. Jacob went a fair race, and Patty Todd did most of the pace-making only to break badly. Renegade made a poor showing, and neither Mahinerangi or Burlesque ever threatened danger. * * * * Iraq and Guy Mauritius were heavily supported to win the Advance Handicap, and during part of the race both gave their supporters hope of victory. Guy Mauritius, Doris Derby, Moana Tama, Radiant Gold, and Adsum were the early leaders, and with six furlongs to go the order was; Guy Mauritius, Radiant Gold, Adsum, Doris Derby, Moana Tama, Captain Heath, and Cracksman. Moana Tama took the lead four furlongs from home, when Iraq made a forward move and the former led into the straight just ahead of Guy Mauritius, Iraq, and Doris Derby. A great race resulted in Doris Derby winning ; by a narrow margin from Moana Tama, with Guy Mauritius, Iraq, and Cracksman following in that order. Doris Derby was in a nice position throughout the race, and finished with a rare burst of speed to snatch victory on the post. The winner is a four-yoar-old filly by Nelson Derby—Doris Pointer, and is something above the average. A nice style of pacer, she promises to do big things, while Doris Derby won handsomely there was a lot of merit in the performance of Moana Tama, a two-year-old by Nelson Derby from Thelma Wrack. On the showing she is one of the early favourites for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes to be run at Ashburton in June, Guy Mauritius was always witli the leaders, and was only beaten in the last bit, while Iraq, who lost ground at the start, was in fourth place after a good performance. Cracksman never looked a winner, but Radiant Gold, a two-year-old by Rey de Oro—Sashwood, showed a lot of speed, and will improve with _ age. Captain Heath found his handicap too much, and Hoyle misbehaved herself at the start, and was not persevered with. Native Son fell shortly after passing the half-mile post.

MASTER ROY WINS PRESIDENT’S The Oamaru Trotting Club’s Meeting was held in fine weather before a large attendance. The track was firm and fast. The totalisator handled £14,488, compared with a total of £12,838 10s for last year’s winter fixture. The amounts passed through the' win and place machines were £6,724 and £7,764 respectively. The President’s Handicap provided a most exciting race from_start to finish. From a good beginning Manoeuvre struck the front with Worthy Queen, Waress, Master Roy, Peter Locanda, Great Author, and Chenwood following in that order. Chenwood then made a dash for the 'front with the idea of getting the rails, but Worthy Queen frustrated this move when she carried on with him, and the pair led from Master Roy, Manoeuvre, Wares'?, and

Peter Locauchi. Three furlongs from, home Pay cl us caiiie round the field very fast, and Manoeuvre again raced to the front before the straight was reached, with Master Roy in a handy position. Halfway down the running Raydus ranged alongside Manoeuvre, whose driver did not appear to notice that in the meantime Master Roy had slipped up on the rails. Before Berkett realised the position Master Roy was past the post three-quarters of a length to the good, with Manoeuvre a close third. Although Master Roy probably had a bit in hand, the driver of Raydus was plainly caught napping. Master Roy was favoured by the way the race was run, and he was well served by the pace-makers Worthy Queen and Ohenwood, the latter anxious to go to the front and the mare’s driver determined that she should have the rails. The result was that both tired badly and finished out of a place. Raydus paced a fine race over the last half-mile, and looks to be in lino for a win very shortly. Manoeuvre ran a peculiar race, for after being in front early she surrendered her position, only to come again with renewed dash at the finish. Peter Locanda had all the best of the running, but lacked dash, and possibly he was feeling the effects of his hard races at Forbury Park. Chenwood faded out badly, and Worthy Queen, after making most of the running, had had enough two furlongs from home. Waress and Ayrmont Chimes showed no dash, and Erin’s Fortune was left at the post. * * * * Chiming Wrack was a warm favourite on the win machine in the Waikaura Handicap, although only fourth fancy in the place betting. He had every chance, but had had enough three furlongs from home. Prince Harvester at once set out to make the running, followed by Triangle, Margaret Parrish, and Billy Sunday, and this was the order over the first mile, with Chiming Wrack, Orphan Bingen, and Golden Bingen handy. The last-named raced to the lead half a mile from home, with Prince Harvester, Billy Sunday, and Triangle following. Golden Bingen was first into the straight, but halfway down the running Billy Sunday assumed the lead, and he won rather comfortably from Golden Bingen, while Triangle got up to beat Prince Harvester for third money. Billy Sunday trotted steadily from start to finish and was possibly the best-driven' horse in the race. This marked his third Win in the past three months, and he may do still better. Golden Bingen showed a lot of speed over the middle stages, and is evidently more than useful; but Triangle is only an average performer, and Prince Harvester failed to stay the journey. Orphan Bingen raced well for a mile and a-half, when he compounded; Kilbirnie Dan broke oh several occasions; Chiming Wrack disappointed badly, and there was nothing much in the efforts of Hakatere (who broke up), Bon Haven, or Margaret Parrish. * * * * On his running in the President’s Handicap, Raydus looked a very likely winner of the Enfield Handicap, but he was allowed to go out at a fair price on both machines. Gunfire and Nelson de Oro were in front in the very early stages, and with six furlongs to go the order was Gunfire, Ayrmont Chimes, Nelson de Oro, Erin’s Fortune, Raydus, and Gold Tinge. Three and a-half furlongs from home Raydus commenced a fast run on the outside, and, though he was forced to race several sulky widths out from the _ rail, he was in third place as the straight was reached, and a furlong from the post he had the race in hand. He was never troubled to win by a couple of lengths from Gunfire, tho next to finish being Gold Tinge, Nelson de Oro, Ayrmont Chimes, and Grand Canyon. Raydus won on the second day of the Forbury Park Meeting, spreadeagling a good field of'pacers, and he should have added the President’s Handicap to that victory. On his^latest showings he is a very fair handicap performer, and he may do still better in the not distant future. Gunfire met one just too good on the day, as did Gold Tinge, whose backers, however, did not receive a dividend. She raced kindly, and put up a great race. Nelson de Oro found the opposition too strong, and Ayrmont Chimes was evidently feeling the effects of his recent hard 'racing. The time, 2min 43 3-ssec, approached the time registered earlier in the day by Harold LOgan ' * * * * Greenmantle was only slightly better backed than Wise Guy in the Stewards’ Handicap, and both played a part in the finish. Encounter made most of the running in the early stages from Wise Guy, Social Pest, and Greenmantle, until Frank Mac moved up at the end of a round, and Camera also joined issue. These horses formed the leading division throughout, and entering the straight Encounter held command from Wise Guy, Greenmantle, and Social Pest. An exciting race took place, but Greenmantle finished best to beat Encounter, who also stayed on better than Wise Guy. The winner is a smart pacer, although not a big one, and he is gifted with a lot of stamina. Following on his Forbury Park win in heavy going, Greenmantle fairly outstayed this fairly useful field in very fast time. He looks likely to win more races. Encounter made all the running, and stayed on well, and Wise Guy in defeat went a very creditable race. Golden Dollar lost ground at the start, but afterwards showed great speed, but Social Pest and Frank Mac failed to stay. •" * * * * The Elecric Handicap, which was run in semi-darkness, was voted a good thing for Sure, but after Black, jester and Margaret Chenault had made practically all the running, Gunmetal and King’s Cup came very fast, Margaret Chenault winning a great race by a verv narrow margin from Gunmetal and King’s Cup with Sure and Quita handy.
