EVOLUTION AND CREATION
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—“ Profanum Vulgus ” dislikes my word “ disciple,” but at the same time admits he is in substantial agreement with Huxley, Haeckel, and Spencer. We como back, then, to my original question. Why jib at the attempt of the astronomer to explain the riddle of the universe' on the ground that he is only an astronomer, and not jib at the attempt of the biologist, on the same ground? It is hardly an answer to say that the astronomer, in handling such a vast subject, showed some modesty by admitting his limitations, while the biologist displayed no such violet-like quality, but just went ahead. Had the biologist any better reasons for belief in himself than the astronomer? —I am, etc., ! 4 Phi. May 11.
