PORT CHALMERS AFFAIRS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —If “ Loyal Citizen ” is so indeed, ho would throw in his lot with a cause meant for the town’s welfare, irrespective of who proposed it. No loyal citizen hides his loyal name under a nom de plume, neither does a good salesman his goods. If “ Loyal Citizen ” made himself conversant with the facts he would learn that under tho present system customers can bank at either Dunedin or Port Chalmers, as both branches have their main offices for Otago in Dunedin, but every depositor cannot enjoy such a privilege. There is no need to transfer tho Dunedin accounts unless any local resident may bank with an Australian bank, which is his and nobody elso’s business?. When the Bank of Now Zealand’s local branch was closed a short time ago the council utilised all efforts to have it kept open full time, but was informed, if it was so anxious, why not transfer its account and business. Then later the National Bank followed the same procedure as its banking friends, and the council thought it wise to get tho views of the depositors, and passed a resolution requesting the mayor to call a meeting of business and other people having connection with the banks, and ascertain their opinion as to having one continuous hank. That was just on ttvo years ago, and to date nothing has been done. Things have just drifted on, and with the improved conditions stated in my previous letter 1 am still of tho opinion, if the people interested expressed their opinions on full-time banking, and those were conveyed to bank headquarters, good would eventuate. I quite appreciate the work of the Progressive League, and that is why I suggest its co-operation.—l am, ’ Thos. Anderson. Alay 10.
