ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE
A VERDICT DF HOT GUILTY WOMAN COMMITTED TO MENTAL HOSPITAL (Pas Ukitsd Fszsi A«»ociatio«.l CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. Charges of the attempted murder of her two months old daughter by cutting its throat with a razor and attempted suicide were preferred against a young married woman, Bertha Nathalia Pike, in- the Supreme Court this morning befor Mr Justice Johnston. The facts were admitted by the defence, and after medical evidence had been heard that the woman had previously been an inmate of the Sunnyside Mental Hospital and was insane at the time of the offences the jury without leaving the box, returned a verdict of not guilty on the grounds of insanity. The woman was ordered to be detained in the Sunnyside Mental Hospital until the wish of the Minister of Justice was known. The Crown said that the woman’s explanation was that the baby had been laughing and crying and she thought it would be happier dead.
