AUSTRALIAN RAILWAYS

COMPULSORY CONFERENCE PROTEST FROM UNIONS. Press Association —By-Telegraph Copyright. SYDNEY, February 2. The Commonwealth Arbitration Court has granted the application of the New South Wales and South Australian railway authorities for a compulsory ■ conference to consider a proposal to bring all transport workers under Federal jurisdiction, which has caused a - storm, of protest among the various unions, which are now governed by State tribunals. Mr J. P. Chappie, secretary of the Australian Railways Union, stated that mass meetings would be held and the question of whether direct action should be taken would depend upon the temper of the employees. Their present mood, he added, was bitter and resentful, as the accumulative decrease of railway salaries and ■ wages in the past five years was more than £12,000,000. Now those under State awards were threatened with the loss of the forty-four-hour week.
