HEROIC MIDSHIPMAN
CONGRATULATED BY PRINCE (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. RUGBY, January 25. The Prince of Wales, as Master of the Merchant Navy, congratulated Midshipman Timms, who displayed exceptional, bravery and endurance _in the Blue Funnel liner Phoius, which was recently for five days at the mercy of a hurricane in the Caribbean Sea. So violent was the wind that the hatch covers were ripped off and the 30-ton funnel lifted bodily out of the vessel’s decks. Timms’s head was cut open during the hurricane, but for 23 hours in the scuppers he poured oil on the water beneath the vessel’s bows. The captain declared that failure would have meant almost certain disaster, as 1,200 tons of water poured in through the open hatches.
