THEFT FROM TOURING PLANE
£6O MISSING [Per United Press Association.] HAWERA, January 15. The sum of £6O disappeared mysteriously from the monoplane Faith in Australia between the .time of departure from Levin on Thursday morning and the conclusion of the passenger nights at Hawera on Thursday evening. The money represented portion of- the proceeds of the passenger flights conducted at Levin on Wednesday, and was rolled up in a sock, which was hidden in the pocket of a coat belonging to a member of The ground crew. The plane employed a booking clerk. On leaving Levin the coat was thrown into the baggage ratk in the cabin. Immediately the plane arrived at Hawera tlve gear stowed in the cabin was removed to the hangar for safety, the coat evidently being-forgotten. Between 200 and 300 people were in and out of the cabin in the course of the passenger flights, and the loss of the money was not discovered until 6 o’clock in the evening, when the day’s takings were being checked.. Nothing was said about the Toss. The Faith in Australia left next morning for Wanganui, and it was not until on the point of the departure of the plane from Wanganui for Westport on Saturday that any complaint was made and a note was sent by Pilot Allen to the police at Hawera, where inquiries have been commenced.
