OPENING OF SEASON KAITUHA GLUI3 Favoured with ideal conditions the Kaituna Club had a very .successful opening day on Saturday. There was an unusually large gathering of visitors and players, and the brilliant sunshine and the lovely verdant surroundings made an attractive setting for a scene of animation. Press photographers were present to take group photographs. The president, Mr H. C. M'Quecn, in declaring the season open, welcomed visitors, and expressed gratification at the large attendance, which he took to be an augury ot a prosperous season. Ho referred with pleasure to the presence as guests of Mr W. Ripley, president of the Kaituna Bowling Club, Mrs Benfield, president of the ladies’ section of the Bowling Club; Dr A. S. Moody, representing the Otago Lawn Tennis Association in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr E. D. Duthie; and Mr S. F. Whitcombe, a veteran life member. He extended congratulations to Miss Rita Hunt, a member of the club, who had participated in the recent notable achievements of the Otago Ladies’ Hockey representative team. Mr Ripley conveyed the good wishes of the Bowling Club, Dr Moody offered felicitations on behalf of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association, and Mr Whitcombe acknowledged the president’s complimentary remarks. Several exhibition sets were arranged. In the evening a dance was held in the bowlers’ pavilion.

BAUAGEWEN CLUB

The Balmacewan Club had excellent weather for its "opening day. In the presence of a large number of players the courts were formally declared open for play by the vice-president of the section (Mr A. M'Millan).

PACIFIC SOUTH-WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS

LOS ANGELES, September. 15. In tho exhibition doubles, opening the Pacific South-west lawn tennis championship on Friday, Perry (England) and Van Ryu were held to a draw by Satoh and Nunoi. Perry and his partner won the first set, 6-0, and the Japanese the second, 17-15.

PRENN BEATS STEDMAN

LONDON, September 16. The German, D. Prenn, beat the New Zealander, Stedman, in the semifinal of the Scottish Lowland championship, 6-2, 6-2.
