BOAT SWAMPED—MAN DROWNED. As the result of the swamping of a small boat off Palmer Head, Wellington, late yesterday afternoon, Ernest Edward Jones, aged thirty-five, a single man, _ was drowned. There were two men in the boat at the time, but the other was rescued by some people who were in another boat in the vicinity. Accompanied by his brother-in-law, Joseph M'Orohon, Jones at the time of the accident was setting fising nets. It is believed that the boat was swamped, and Jones lost his hold of the craft. The plight of M'Crohon, who clung to the boat, was observed by three men in a boat in the vicinity, and they were able to get him aboard. The accident occurred about 5 o’clock, but the sea at that time was top rough to allow efforts to be made to recover the body. CRUISER’S COOK COMMITS SUICIDE. The cook on H.M.S. Dunedin, Walter Frederick Perry, was found hanging in the storeroom on the cruiser. Perry was an Imperial rating, and had been on the Dunedin for about three months. At the inquest a verdict of suicide while depressed was returned.—Auckland message. BODY FOUND IN CREEK. The body of Geoffrey William Deal, aged sixty-sis, married, was found floating in a creek on his farm at Eiffelton last evening. Marks on. the bank indicated that he slipped when he went for a drink. He had been subject to fainting turns. The body was found by his son, who went in search of his father at dusk.—Ashburton Press Association. DEATH OF RACING CLUB SECRETARY. A tragic discovery was made at the Awapum racecourse this morning, when the body of Mr Victor Thomas Dibble, accountant and secretary of the Manawatu Racing Glub, was found in the trees near the main stand, the cause of death being a shot from a revolver. The deceased had been secretary of the racing club since the death of Mr J. M. Johnston two years ago, having come from Auckland, where he was assistant secretary to the Racing Club. While in Palmerston North the deceased was very popular. • He had been connected with the Citizens’ Show Committee, the Rotary Club, and the local branch of the Red Cross Society.
