AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS
AUCKLAND'S INVITATION TERMS OF TOUR [SpBCUX TO IHB ‘ St*.*.’] AUCKLAND, December 14. With reference, to yesterday’s Sydney cablegram, the invitation to visit New Zealand was extended to Carl Phillips by the' Mount Eden and North Shore Clubs. Three other swimmers, Victor Besomo, Frank Griffiths, and, Owen Griffiths, were asked to accompany Phillips. Mr H. Moore, secretary of the Mount Eden Club, stated that the invitations had already been accepted by the four swimmers, but as a, matter or form the New South Wales Amateur Swimming Association’s approval of the undertaking tour must be obtained. He doubted whether the association could take exception to the proposed itinerary. The visitors would be expected to appear at three carnivals in Auckland and at five other towns in the province. The Otago Centre had asked for Phillips, but the clubs had offered the centre to take the four Australians. Negotiations in the matter were proceeding. The Australians would not swim in Wellington or Christchurch, and they would be in the dominion a month. Amother official said that while they were in Now Zealand in tbe 1929-30 season neither Griffiths ..nor Ryan had complained of having found the tour strenuous. While he admitted that Ryan and Griffiths had travelled and swum before the public a good deal he said that outside Auckland the competition had always been light. The association’s impression that too much had been , expected of Griffiths and Ryan was, he thought, due to Ryan’s unexpected defeat by the New Zealand champion, G. Bridson, shortly after the Australian had arrived- in Auckland from Sydney, quite below form. The tour had, however, served as a part of their training, for on their return to Auckland a month later both the Australians had defeated Bridson.
