Mr W. Kirkham, who has been on a business visit to Dunedin, left for Auckland this morning. Mr J. S. M'lnnes started for Christchurch by the through express this morning. Mr G. Z, Bindley left for Wellington by this morning’s express. Mr J. Hope, who has been on a visit to Australia, returned by the Monowai, which arrived at Wellington yesterday. Cabled advice has been received by, Lieutenant F. W. G. M‘Leod, of New, Plymouth, that he has been appointed musical judge for the ~ Queensland championship band contests to be held next Easter. After consultation with the committee controlling the Regi-mental-Municipal Band Mr M‘Leod has been granted leave to accept the offer.Mr H., L. Tapley, who has been on a combined business and pleasure visit to Australia, arrived at Wellington by the Monowai yesterday. He will arrive in Dunedin during the week-end. Mr Geo. Mr James Fletcher left Dunedin by, the 8.40 train to-day after a week spent in Otago. i * Mrs Joan Grant Ritchie; who died yesterday at the residence of one of her, sons, Mr Thos.- Ritchie; Michie street,Roslyn, was known to friends add neighbours as a Scotswoman of the best type—intellectual, well-informed, and kind-hearted. She was bom at Petercoulter, Aberdeenshire, on April 1,1840, and came to New Zealand by the s.s. Ruapehu-in 1907, bringing two of her sons—Mr J. Ritchie (now of Wellington) and Mr R. Ritchie (of Dunedin). It was to be with Mr T.i Ritchie (of Ohas. Begg and Co.) that they took passage to this country. Mrs Ritchie lived in Dunedin ever since.Her fund of general information was, uncommonly extensive, and she retained her mental_ faculties to the last*Though in her ninety-third year, she was laid up only a fortnight. The University Council; has passed' the following resolution;—“The council records its sorrow at the death of the Rev. Professor Hewitson, who was a member of the council from 1903 to 1922, and expresses to his widow and relatives its deep sympathy with them in the loss they have sustained. On the retirement of Professor Hewitson. from the council the members placed on record their high appreciation of his valuable services to the University as a councillor; They now gratefully acknowledge that since his retirement ho ; has used every _ opportunity by speech and , pen to point the University and the community to high educational ideals. During his mastership of Knox College, extending over a period of some years, many of the University, students iwere brought under the influence of his personality, an influence which will be an important factor for good in their lives. Dykes, died at Christchurch yesterday, aged seventy-one yearsBorn at Tayport (opposite Dundee) f - Captain Dykes served' his apprenticeship in sail in the West Indian trade,; j In 1905 he brought out to New Zea-j land the new steamer Apanui for the Northern Steamship ' Company, of, Auckland. Then he joined the New; Zealand Government as mate of the Hinemoa. In 1908 Captain Dykes was appointed examiner of masters ' and mates at Auckland, a position he held untnl 1918, when he was appointed master. of the Government training ship Amokura. When the Government decided to cease using the Amokura as a training ship, in 1920, Captain Dykes was appointed Superintendent of Marine and examiner of masters and mates at Lyttelton, in succession to Captain Marciel, a position he retained until he retired from the service in 1927. Since his retirement Captain Dykes had made two trips to Britain and latterly had been engaged as ad- ( juster.of compasses at Lyttelton. He held the highest Board of Trade qualifications of extra blaster and adjuster of compasses. He leaves a widow and two sons—Mr James Dykes (of the Union Company’s steamer Rangatira),. and Mr Alex. Dykes (who is in the Public Service), and two daughters.— Christchurch correspondent. Guests at the Grand Hotel includes Mr F. Booth (Manchester, England), Messrs P. W. Mothes and C.
