THEFT OF CASH BOX
MIDDLE-AGED MAN CHARGED Percy .May all, aged 49 years, pleaded guilty in the Police Court this morning to a charge that on September 21, at Mosgiel, he stole £7 11s in money and a cash box valued at ss, the property of Harold Cyril Johns. Chief-detective Young said that the complainant was a grocer with, a shop in Gordon road, Mosgiel. At 10 a.m. on September 21 ho came into the shop and saw the accused at the counter. The latter did some business, and later on the complainant ascertained that a cash box containing £7 11s in money had been stolon from behind the counter. The police were notified, and suspicion turned on the accused. The latter was interviewed regarding the offence, later making a statement admitting it. Counsel said that the man had been perfectly frank, and of the amount taken only Is lid had not been recovovered. Drink was the cause of the accused’s down f all.
The Magistrate (Mr .1. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) remanded the accused till Saturday for a report from the probation officer.
Counsel made application for an order suppressing the name, but the magistraet said that the name had already been published, and in any case it was not a matter for an order.
